Is the idea of estate planning overwhelming to you? Many of you have answered in the affirmative. It is outside of your comfort zone, having to think about your own death. Certainly it is not a popular topic and not a great icebreaker when meeting new people. But it is a very important topic to consider.
This can be a rather confusing process, perhaps even more so for those of you who have no prior experience with wills, trusts or any other aspect of estate planning. If you set no plans, the government has a process in place to distribute your property. Intestate distribution follows strict formulas and there are no provisions for the actual needs of your family.
On the financial side, the government makes no provision for any part of your estate to pass untaxed. Realistically, it is their job to collect every possible cent available tax-wise. Estate planning leaves you in control of your estate, not a bureaucrat.
You may be concerned with the costs of estate planning and rightfully so. You could have issue with how much time it can take to get basic information from a qualified estate planning attorney; again this is quite an understandable reaction.
