What Paperwork Do You Need to Qualify for Medicaid?

October 18, 2016 by Stephen Unsworth

Do I qualify for Medicaid? This is one of the most common questions that people ask. Knowing the answer is important, because qualifying for Medicaid can make it possible for you to get insurance coverage for various types of care which it is possible there would be no other insurance coverage for. Do I qualify for Medicaid?

Whether or not you qualify for Medicaid is going to depend upon things like how much income and wealth your family has, how many people are in your family, what your medical expenditures are, your age, your disability status, and whether you are pregnant or caring for children.

The rules for Medicaid qualification are strict, and you are going to need to be able to provide proof that you meet the eligibility requirements. Therefore, one of the key questions you need to ask yourself in addition to asking, do I qualify for Medicaid?, is whether you can provide the paperwork and the documentation to prove that you qualify for Medicaid coverage.

Unsworth LaPlante, PLLC can provide you with help in determining both whether you can qualify for Medicaid coverage and what you must do to prove you qualify. For seniors and the disabled in Vermont, you would most likely qualify for standard Medicaid coverage or Green Mountain Care if you are going to be eligible for any benefits at all. Your attorney can assist you in determining what is involved in applying and can help you to do everything possible to try to get Green Mountain Care to pay for your medical needs. Call us to learn more about the application process and the paperwork you need to qualify for Medicaid coverage.

Do I qualify for Medicaid?

Before you determine what paperwork you are going to need, it is beneficial to consider whether you are actually going to qualify for Medicaid coverage in Vermont or not. You do not want to spend time submitting an application, only to discover that you make too much money or have too many family resources.

The specific income and asset level that disqualifies you from Medicaid can vary based on the program you’re applying for and your family size, so you should get help from an experienced attorney to find out whether you meet basic eligibility requirements or not.

You should also be aware that making transfers of assets or giving away property for less than it is worth can result in a period of disqualification. During this period, you will not get Medicaid coverage. The length of disqualification is based on the value of assets given away or transferred. Avoiding the disqualification period is one key reason why talking with a Vermont Medicaid planning lawyer is necessary long before you need nursing home care.

If you meet Vermont residency and other basic requirements and have not become disqualified by income, resource limits, or asset transfers, then you hopefully will be able to successfully apply to get Medicaid.

What Paperwork Do I Need to Qualify for Medicaid?

If you think you can qualify for Medicaid, you should obtain an application and complete it in full. There is an application for healthcare services available on the website of Green Mountain Care. You should begin by filling out this paperwork and providing all of the answers that the government needs in order to screen you for eligibility for Green Mountain Care and other healthcare programs that the state of Vermont offers.

When you submit your application, it specifies that certain types of paperwork and documentation must be included with it. For example, you have to submit copies of both sides of insurance cards if you or anyone in the family has insurance. You will also need to provide copies of your most recent federal tax returns, which can be used as proof of income. If you have a new business and have not filed taxes for the business, you have to send income and expense statements.
