Medicaid is important for many people in America. Dependence on this program has grown. As costs increase, the government is looking for ways to lower them. This fall, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced its Initiative to Reduce Avoidable Hospitalizations among Nursing Facility Residents.
This effort seeks improvements in the quality of medical care and services in nursing facilities. It also is designed to reduce hospitalizations among nursing facility residents that are avoidable. It hopes to accomplish that as it funds organizations with enhanced services on-site that support nursing facility residents.
Help for Medically Fragile Population
Residents of nursing facilities are most likely (by two thirds) to be enrolled in Medicaid. Most of those use Medicare as well. These dual program enrollees are very fragile health-wise, and most are chronically ill. Research suggests that about 45 percent of hospitalizations among this group could have been avoided. Costs in 2011 for avoidable hospitalizations are estimated in the range of $7 and 8 billion.
