How Much Should Estate Planning Cost?

January 5, 2014 by Stephen Unsworth

The first thought that goes through your head when you start estate planning is “how much is this all going to cost me?” Though there is nothing wrong with asking how much estate planning will cost, it is important to realize how much it will cost without a plan in place. Estate planning is very serious, but as for just how much it will cost the only answer applicable is: it depends.

One-Size-Fits-All Pricing

There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all pricing. Why? Because the price will greatly depend on your estate. If your estate is complicated, an estate planning attorney is going to charge you more. If your estate is relatively simple, the estate planning attorney will leave the fees minimal. Therefore, you need to consult an estate planning attorney to see how costly and complicated your estate actually is.

Don’t Sell Yourself Short

Just because you want to save on money doesn’t mean you should sell yourself short on taking care of your property. Do not skip documents or essential parts of estate planning just to save a buck. Though this will save you initially, those who will suffer are your loved ones.

No matter how much estate planning costs, never try to do it on your own. Even the simplest estate can make costly mistakes with DIY estate planning documents. Most estate planning attorneys can work within your budget to help you protect your assets and your loved ones, without cutting corners.
