Business Planning Provides Motivation and Reference Points

July 15, 2013 by Stephen Unsworth

Planning takes time. But planning also takes you places in a more organized fashion. If you own a bigger business, you probably have a number of people who can devote themselves to planning. As a small business owner, planning is every bit as important.

Good planning starts with how you organize your business. Think carefully about the business structure that works best for you. Experienced legal help can make sure you’re on the right track. Are you content to simply operate as a sole proprietorship? Or would you like additional protections through a limited liability company structure, which is flexible yet offers some of the benefits of being incorporated. Perhaps you prefer the sense of commitment and stability that an incorporated business can project.

Don’t Stop There

For small business owners, it can be easy to neglect planning aspects after the first decisions have been made. Planning is time consuming. Unless you work on a retainer basis or plan during your free time, devoting time to planning can take away from actually making money. But the benefits are real and will most likely lead to bigger earnings later.

Motivation is one of the results of a good planning session. A business plan can provide reference points in order to help you on your journey. Along the way, you will need to deal with others, whether it is a lease agreement, contracts with customers or vendors, or employment issues. That’s where a good attorney can add value to your organization.
